Daily Grammar offers free grammar lessons. On their site they have a whole archive of lessons along with the answer keys. They also offer a daily blog where they post even more free grammar lessons. This is a great way to start grammar lessons without spending a dime! Who says you can’t home school for free?
Some homeschool families choose to follow a formal grammar curriculum and some families choose to cover very little grammar. In classical education, grammar is emphasized quite a bit. For unschoolers, grammar would not be covered unless the student showed interest in grammar. We took a middle of the road approach and we covered grammar in the context of writing. We used Excellence in Writing which does not teach grammar rules on their own, but talks about parts of speech as a student is learning to write.
I like to think of grammar rules as being similar to the rules of baseball. Once you know the basic of baseball, you can continue to improve your game. It’s the same way for grammar, learn the basics and then it just takes a lot of practice to write well. I’m still practicing like crazy, hoping to make the big leagues some day.
