I’ve Decided to Home School…Now What?

1. Home schooling is legal in the US however each state has laws governing what kind of paperwork must be filed to home school. A good website for a summary of state home school laws is the home school legal defense  association.

2. If necessary, notify your child’s current school in writing. If you are leaving in the middle of the year, I think it is courteous to notify the child’s teacher.

3. Start planning your child’s course of study, if you will be home schooling independently or look through the materials provided by the online school if you have signed up with an online school.

4. If you choose to home school independently-order catalogs from all the home school suppliers. (Sonlight, Rainbow Resources, Veritas Press, etc…)

5. Read Homeschooling books and start to formulate your homeschooling goals. (Will you be home schooling for religious reasons…to provide a balanced family life….to unschool…to travel?) All these factors will contribute to what you choose to study and how you choose to study each subject.

6. Jump in and don’t expect to be a perfect homeschool mom. Love your kids, share your love of learning and you will be successful.
