My Spouse Doesn’t Want Me To Homeschool

Sometimes one parent will get the itch to homeschool and the outher spouse is not supportive. If this describes your situation, you are not alone. Here are some things you can do while still respecting your partner’s point of view.

1. Pray- If you are a person of faith, I suggest praying about your decision to homeschool and your spouses view of homeschooling in general.

2. Don’t Lecture- Find out as much information as possible about homeschooling but resist the urge to educate your spouse. When you are excited about something it is very easy to talk about it constantly. Take a gentle approach and don’t overwhem your partner.

3. Consider Online Schools- Many husbands in particular are reticent to have their wives homeschool without some kind of accountability or structure. In addition, some husbands don’t want to spend  money on homeschooling. Online schools, although not pure homeschooling, are good options in these situations. The family is provided with a support system and there are many schools that offer free online programs.

4. After-school- After-schooling is a new term describing how some parents spend time using their own curriculum after school. Aften times these are families who are supplementing a public school curriculum. If your spouse just can’t support homeschooling, start trying to figure how you can incorporate some of what you want to teach your children into your afternoon schedule

5. Look into a hybrid school- Many new school choices are popping up across the nation including schools that are in session 2-3 days a week. On the alternate days, students complete assignments at home. These schools are a great alternative when a spouse is not supportive of homeschooling or for a parent who doesn’t want to plan out all the curriculum
